At South Dayton Smiles, our primary goal is to help you take care of your natural, native teeth. We understand that there are situations where the native tooth cannot be saved. Other times, it is simply easier to pull out a baby tooth that has already come loose and is ready to fall out. There are other situations where a tooth might be damaged due to an injury or decay.

Fortunately, dental extractions are not anything like they once were. We have oral sedation dentistry at our disposal, and we use modern techniques. This makes it easier for us to remove a tooth while minimizing all possible discomfort.

Can You Save the Tooth?

We will do everything we can to save your tooth and preserve your smile. If there is oral decay, we might be able to use a filling instead of removing the entire tooth. Or, we may be able to perform a root canal to preserve its natural architecture. We might be able to place a crown on top of the tooth to protect it.

Our dentist will discuss all of the options with you, but if we believe the tooth cannot be saved, then we will recommend an extraction.

Why Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

There are several possible reasons why a tooth extraction might be necessary. They include:

  • Some children may need a baby tooth extraction to make room for the adult tooth.
  • If a tooth has been severely injured in a traumatic accident, we may recommend an extraction.
  • If there is severe oral decay that cannot be fixed with a filling or a root canal, an extraction could be necessary.
  • We may also recommend extraction for overcrowed or impacted teeth.
  • An extraction could make room for dentures or a bridge.

If there is an infection in your mouth, it is important to treat it as quickly as possible. Otherwise, the infections impact other teeth, gums, and bones… not roots. We usually recommend quick extractions if we believe they are necessary.

Having too many teeth in your mouth can also be a significant issue. It could put stress on the rest of your teeth and lead to jaw pain and headaches. Overcrowding can also be an issue if your wisdom teeth are beginning to emerge.

How Do Wisdom Teeth Extractions Work?

Even though wisdom teeth are natural, they can lead to significant problems. We will let you know if you have wisdom teeth based on your oral X-rays.

When wisdom teeth erupt, which usually occurs in your late teens or early adult years, they can push other teeth out of the way, leading to significant problems with your bite. Furthermore, wisdom teeth sometimes have a difficult time erupting. They can become impacted by other teeth, leading to significant oral damage.

For this reason, we may recommend wisdom teeth extraction.

How Do You Minimize Discomfort?

We have a variety of sedation options to minimize discomfort during the extraction. We can use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. That way, you remain awake, but you do not feel anything.

If you would like something stronger during the procedure, we have choices available. When you come for your visit, we will discuss your options, allowing you to make the best decision for your health.
